Our action

Education, a priority issue

In Senegal, Law No. 2004-37 of December 15, 2004 makes schooling compulsory and free for all children aged 6 to 16. However, challenges related to access to quality education remain significant.

According to ANSD data, in 2024, only 59.8% of children in this age group are enrolled in school. In other words, 4 out of 10 children have never been enrolled in school or have dropped out prematurely. The disparities between urban and rural areas are particularly marked:

  • In urban areas, 68% of children are enrolled in school, compared to only 51.9% in rural areas.
  • Non-enrollment affects 12.9% of children in urban areas, but rises to 28.7% in rural areas.

There are many causes: repeated failure at school, disability, early marriage and pregnancy, or begging. Added to this are regional inequalities in educational provision and quality, further limiting the chances of academic success for the most vulnerable children.

PLAY's commitment

In close collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture, and civil society organizations, PLAY International has been working in Senegal since 2019 to address these issues by implementing inclusive educational programs focused on children and young people most exposed to inequality. These young people benefit from enhanced learning, improved health and psychosocial skills, and support in developing their roles as informed, active citizens within their communities.

In connection with the organization of the Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in October 2026 and will be an unprecedented event in Africa, PLAY is working with the organizing committee to mobilize Senegalese youth around the promotion of Olympic values and sport as a powerful tool for development and social cohesion.
