our actions

PLAY International has been present in Rwanda since 2023 and has implemented programs that address the root causes of the difficulties faced by children and young people, using sport as an educational tool.

PLAY International is currently running two main projects: the REKA project and the Toutes En Sport project.

REKA Project

“REKA” means “STOP” in Kinyarwanda. This project uses sports and games to empower children against the violence they experience. PLAY has implemented its educational sports games in seven schools in the eastern and western districts of Kirehe and Rutsiro by organizing social and sports sessions. These sessions aim to strengthen children's knowledge and skills in violence prevention through clubs set up on Wednesday afternoons, known as “protection clubs.” Teachers, school principals, and inspectors have been trained to supervise child protection clubs.

All in Sport

This project aims to reduce inequalities between boys and girls in sport. It is being carried out in partnership with the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), the Rwanda Women in Sport Organization (AKWOS), and Humanity & Inclusion. The project works with 22 community sports clubs and five public schools to promote girls' participation and integration in sport. Sessions dedicated to combating gender stereotypes, developing girls' skills, promoting solidarity between girls and boys, etc. have been created and shared with club coaches, who can then disseminate them within their clubs.

testimonies

PLAY International, through the REKA project, trained teachers on children's rights and the prevention of violence in schools. Teachers and students learned through games to recognize and report all forms of violence. Teachers and students learned to recognize and report all forms of violence. The project extended awareness beyond the school, involving parents and the wider community. As a result, harmful punishments were replaced with non-violent discipline, creating safer school environments.

Thanks to the training I received from PLAY International, I learned what violence really is and how to protect children from it. Thanks to Playagogics, we now teach students through games, and they have formed a protection club. Today, the entire school and even the community are actively working together to prevent violence.

Resilience is a real strength of Rwandan society, one that is emphasized and admired by most people (...). Sport can contribute to this resilience because it has both a collective dimension (...) and an individual dimension, promoting self-esteem, self-confidence, and the ability to manage emotions both on and off the field.
